Our Chef takes second place

Hostex was home to Unilever Food Solutions’ new cooking competition, Plate to Win. Darcy Els, sous chef at Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa in Johannesburg took top place and R10 000 in prize money. The cook-off took place during the busy Hostex expo at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Dayn Kruger, head chef at Fraise Restaurant near Hartbeespoort Dam, placed second and won R7 000. Melusi Twala, chef de partie at the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, came in third place and won R5 000.

Some 20 chefs from Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg participated in the mystery basket competition, with daily cook-offs in four rounds of hotly contested action. Contestants were eliminated based on the dishes they plated for the Unilever Food Solutions chefs and judges.

Craig Elliott, executive head chef of Unilever Food Solutions, says of this new event on the culinary calendar: “Surrounded by lights, cameras and an audience of industry peers wanting to see action, our 20 contestants were under the culinary spotlight. And they didn’t disappoint.

“Unilever Food Solutions is all about enhancing the skills of chefs with the quality products that we produce and with competitions such as Plate to Win. We take pride in the creative flair our contestants demonstrated today [18 March] in using our products to conveniently prepare and present their unique dishes to the judges.
